Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane delivered exactly that during a thrilling Champions League encounter in Munich. The match ended 2–2, but the biggest talking point afterwards was not simply the result. Rice had a major statement to make about his England teammate and his chances of winning the prestigious Ballon d’Or.

Could Kane really be the outstanding candidate for football’s most coveted individual award? And why does Rice believe his teammate deserves such recognition?

Let’s break down the action, the controversy, and the comments that have put these two English stars in the spotlight.

Harry Kane Shows Why He Remains One of Football’s Most Dangerous Players

Harry Kane has built a reputation as a striker who can change a match in an instant. Against Arsenal, he demonstrated that his influence stretches far beyond scoring goals.

Bayern faced a determined Arsenal side that arrived in Germany looking to prove it could compete with Europe’s elite. The visitors started with confidence, pressing aggressively and looking for opportunities to break through the home defence.

However, Arsenal suffered an early setback when Bukayo Saka was forced off with a thigh problem. Eberechi Eze came on as his replacement, and the substitute wasted little time making an impact.

Eze opened the scoring in the 25th minute after receiving an excellent pass from Martin Odegaard. His finish gave Arsenal the lead and briefly silenced the home crowd.

But Bayern had their own superstar ready to respond.

Kane produced a superb through-ball that released Alphonso Davies, who finished calmly to bring the German side level. It was a reminder that the England captain can create opportunities as brilliantly as he converts them.

Later, Kane stepped up to score from the penalty spot after a handball decision against Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber.

Suddenly, Bayern were leading 2–1.

Was this going to be another occasion when Kane’s quality proved too much for Arsenal? Not quite.

Declan Rice Delivers the Moment Arsenal Needed

Just when Bayern appeared to be closing in on victory, Declan Rice stepped forward.

Arsenal refused to surrender, continuing to search for an opening despite the pressure of playing away against one of Europe’s strongest teams.

Their persistence finally paid off in the 82nd minute. Viktor Gyokeres supplied the pass, and Rice surged into the penalty area before driving a clinical finish beyond goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

The goal made it 2–2 and sent the travelling Arsenal supporters into celebration.

Rice had not only rescued a valuable point but also demonstrated the determination that has made him such an influential figure in Mikel Arteta’s team.

Arsenal even threatened to find a late winner, forcing Neuer into another important save.

The final whistle confirmed a draw, but the contest had delivered much more than a shared result. It showcased Kane’s creativity, Rice’s composure, and the competitive spirit that makes Champions League football so compelling.

For Arsenal, the performance offered encouragement. For Bayern, it was a reminder that even a home advantage and a lead cannot guarantee victory.

Why Does Declan Rice Believe Harry Kane Deserves the Ballon d’Or?

Here is where the story becomes even more interesting.

Following the match, Rice publicly backed Kane as his preferred candidate for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, describing him as the clear winner in his view.

Rice pointed to Kane’s extraordinary output over the previous year and the remarkable standard he has maintained at club and international level.

His assessment was not based on goals alone.

Kane’s assist for Davies demonstrated his vision and ability to unlock a defence. His penalty showed his composure under pressure, while his overall performance highlighted the intelligence and versatility that separate elite forwards from ordinary goalscorers.

Rice also explained that playing alongside Kane for England—and facing him at club level—provides a unique perspective on his abilities.

That is an important distinction. Watching a player on television is one thing; training with him, competing against him, and experiencing his decision-making at close quarters is another.

But does that automatically make Kane the favourite?

Not necessarily. The Ballon d’Or debate involves performances, individual statistics, trophies, and competition from other world-class players. Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal and other leading stars are also part of the wider conversation.

Nevertheless, Rice’s endorsement adds another powerful voice to the discussion.

Can Harry Kane Win the 2026 Ballon d’Or?

Kane has a compelling case.

His scoring record, creative contribution, and importance to Bayern make him a serious contender for individual honours. His performance against Arsenal offered another example of how he can influence a match in multiple ways.

The timing is particularly significant because the Ballon d’Or conversation is intensifying ahead of the awards ceremony.

Still, there is no guarantee that Kane will take home the trophy. Individual awards are decided through a broader evaluation of candidates, and strong performances must be considered alongside the achievements of their rivals.

What is clear is that Kane has given supporters plenty to discuss.
